# Standing meditation, held for a real minute

Zhan zhuang means standing like a post. You stand with the knees slightly unlocked, the arms held as if resting on the surface of water, the spine long, and you do not move. Depending on who is describing it, this is either the foundation of every internal art or an elaborate way of doing nothing. Both camps agree on the part that matters: it is much harder than it looks, and the difficulty arrives on a schedule.

Minute one is fine. Minute two is fine. Somewhere in the third minute the shoulders start asking to be put down, and what you do about that request is the whole practice. These 26 classes are the ones the app can open a session with, and 8 of them are under three minutes — which is not a token length, it is the length most people can repeat tomorrow.

## What is happening while nothing is happening

Standing still is a postural task, not a rest. Holding a stable stance is continuous low-level work for the ankle and hip stabilisers and for the postural muscles along the spine, and holding it with the arms raised adds an isometric load at the shoulder girdle that most people have not asked for in years. It is also, unavoidably, an attention task: there is nothing to follow, so what you notice is your own alignment and your own breathing.

That is as far as this page will go. Standing practice attracts claims about cultivating and circulating energy, and several class titles below use that language because those are the titles their authors gave them. Reproducing a title is attribution, not agreement. The site’s position on energy, organ and immunity claims is written down rather than implied, in [§4.7](https://tai-chi.app/method#47-what-the-evidence-does-not-support).

What is left is a specific, useful thing: three minutes of quiet standing with a long exhale, at roughly five and a half breaths a minute, which is the pace the app’s own guided blocks are written to. That breathing rate is the least speculative part of this tradition and is discussed at the confidence the evidence supports in [§4.5](https://tai-chi.app/method#45-breath).

## How long to stand, honestly

The traditional answers are unhelpful — twenty minutes, forty minutes, an hour before dawn — because they describe the practice of people who had already been doing it for a decade. The useful answer is: as long as you can hold without the shoulders creeping up, plus about fifteen seconds. Then stop. A held position that has quietly turned into a shrug is training the shrug.

One minute daily beats fifteen minutes on Sunday, and it is not close. The library carries the one-, two- and three-minute holds as first-class classes for that reason, not as samplers for the long ones. If you want a progression, add thirty seconds a week and go back down whenever a session is hard rather than merely uncomfortable.

Discomfort in the thighs and shoulders is expected and is the point. Sharp knee pain, pins and needles, or light-headedness are not: unlock the knees further, lower the arms, and come out of it. Nothing here is a test of endurance, and [§9](https://tai-chi.app/method#9-safety-scope) sets out plainly what this site does not attempt to supervise.

## Why every session starts here

Standing practice is the first of the six phases the app builds every session from, and it is one of only two that are never dropped — the other is the close. A ten-minute session loses its form block before it loses its ninety seconds of standing, which looks backwards until you have tried the alternative: starting a balance class cold, straight off a chair, with your attention still on the phone.

The phase exists to change what you bring rather than to train anything. Thirty seconds of it is enough to notice that one hip is carrying more than the other, and noticing that before the balance work is the difference between practising your balance and practising your list. The arc, and why it is fixed, is in [§5.1](https://tai-chi.app/method#51-the-five-phase-arc).

24 of these 26 classes can be done seated or with a chair to hold. Seated standing-meditation sounds like a contradiction and is not: the spine, the breath and the attention are all still available, and what is removed — the ankle work — was never the part that made it worth doing first.

## The 26 classes on this page

Standing and grounding practice, shortest first. The one-minute holds are not warm-ups for the long ones; they are the dose most people actually repeat.

## Setting it up

You already get this. Every session the app builds opens with a standing or seated centring block, at whatever length the total allows, and choosing *calm* as your focus more than doubles its weighting — at ten minutes with that focus, centring and closing are most of the session.

If you want it on its own, open one of the classes below directly. [The winding-down page](https://tai-chi.app/for/stress) covers the breathing side of this, and [the balance page](https://tai-chi.app/for/balance) covers what standing still is quietly training.
